THEY sailed smooth and sure above the clouds. The cyclist propelled

the balloon with hunch-shouldered conviction. She hadn"t seemed to

notice the new passengers in the basket at all. The air was blessed with

the same sweet, clear scent that Joe and Baker had woken to every

morning since they had come above the clouds. A refreshing breeze

brushed their faces. Nothing but the balloonist"s lighting of the burner

could be heard as they made their way thenceforth, casting an oblong

shadow on the blushing billows below.

Joe leaned over the edge of the basket, contemplating a last

goodbye. He had thought he was through with farewells. Joe thought

waking up in heaven (for he still thought of it as such, no matter how

much Baker objected) should be a jubilant parade of rapturous greetings.

He had thought goodbyes were an earthly thing. But they existed here as

well. Sad partings and breaking hearts were waiting in the shadows of

every incarnation, it appeared.

They floated ever farther away from the mountain and the villa in

the clouds. Soon it was no longer in sight, shrouded behind the

atmosphere altogether. The balloon ride was quiet, undisturbed by word

or breath. The operator of the vessel was not talkative. She had a stern,

serious face and a committed stare, which was fine with Joe. He was in

no mood to befriend or be befriended. For the time being, he was content

to be asocial and let his eyes see the shapes in clouds.

Nothing much happened. A flock of geese flew along with the

balloon for a while, ducking in and out of clouds. They honked greetings,

but Joe did not reply, and the birds sailed away into another patch of sky.
